Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1929. Hardcover. 8vo (7.6 in, 19.2 cm). xi, [xii blank], 267, [268 blank] pp. The University of Chicago Sociological Series. Index.
First edition: stated. American teacher turned sociologist, Frances R. Donovan (1880-1965) published The Woman who Waits (1920), The Saleslady (1929), and The Schoolma'am (1938); otherwise, her work is unknown. In his introduction, Robert E. Park slights his former student's work, however methodical and formal as that of any respected sociologist. At length he explains, "The book she has written, because of its explanatory character, has more the character of a personal narrative and a report of observations than of a systematic treatise."
