Marie Bashkirtseff (1860-1884) was a brilliantly multi-faceted Ukrainian-French painter who exhibited at the Paris Salon and dreamed of founding an art school for women. She confides her life in 20,000 handwritten pages: "If this book is not exact, absolute, strict truth, it has no reason for being... I tell everything, everything, everything." - preface. Bashkirtseff has inspired prominent diarists, women's rights activists, and many others with the universal appeal of her journal.
