Lowell: Oliver March; Powers & Bagley, 1842. 12mo (6 in, 15.3 cm). [8 ads] [14] 15-156 [157] [3 blank] pp.; ills.

Sole edition: When a textile mill opened in Lowell, MA in 1823, "Lowell girls" or "mill girls" were recruited from New England villages. Despite shops, religious institutions, education, and recreation, the women 15-30 years of age worked 12-14 hours a day under unhealthy conditions. Executives strictly controlled the women's moral and social behavior. 1830s-1850s many women protested wage cuts and working conditions with marginal results; ultimately, they were replaced by poor immigrants tolerant of low pay and harsh conditions.
