First edition: Angelina W. Grimke (1880-1958) was an African American and lesbian poet, playwright, and the first African American woman to write a play and to present it on-stage. The play, Rachel, was produced by the Drama Committee of the NAACP, featured African American actors, and was semi-autobiographical. Grimke's most celebrated work expressed the despair of bringing African American children into a racist world.
